How View Folder Sizes to Free Up Drive Space

I have often wanted to view how much space each of my my folders were taking up, but for some reason, Windows Explorer does not offer an option to view that particular detail. Sure, I can hover over each folder individually, but nobody has time for that. Today, I finally decided to do something about this problem and create a new detail option for Windows XP.

My external hard drive was getting quite full so I decided to convert some of my FLAC music files into MP3s to reduce space. I found good, free FLAC to MP3 software but the problem was that I only wanted to convert the songs in the folders that were taking up the most space. One option is AVG PC Tuneup, but that costs money and even though I own it I don't want t ohave to open a separate program for a tiny bit of folder information.

I downloaded the tiny freeware (OPEN SOURCE!) utility Folder Size from Source Forge.

After a quick install, I went to the View Menu and clicked "Choose Details." A new checkbox appeared for "Folder Size" and I can now see the size of my folders and not just my files in details view. I wish I had done this much sooner, but better late than even later.

If you are wondering why I use XP; I had upgraded to Windows 7 but my current system is kind of shabby and XP works better. I may buy a used computer soon and use my Win7 disk to upgrade from Vista.

About This Blog

This site is a resource for finding giveaways to enter and places for bloggers to promote giveaways that they are having. I created Cakeblast Resources because I wanted all my most important blog resource links in one place. This is a place to share giveaways and contests that I am not hosting myself. I also want to provide a place to find important links that bloggers can use such as sweepstakes sites, contest linkys, and other places to promote your blog. I have recently included my list of homeschool resources as well.
